Update
by
Senator James J. Rhoades
Each year, a vast number of farmers, individuals and families
travel to Harrisburg to take part in the nation's largest indoor agricultural
event – the Pennsylvania Farm Show. This year, the Farm Show will run from
Saturday, January 5 through Sunday, January 12. The event is free and open to
the public.
The eight-day event gives farmers from across the state an
opportunity to market and display their livestock and produce. This year's event
is expected to draw more than 400,000 visitors, and more than 270 exhibitors are
scheduled. There will also be more than 10,000 competitive exhibits with more
than $465,000 in prize money to be distributed. The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN)
will feature a number of live and taped Farm Show events for those who are
unable to attend.
The theme of this year's Farm Show is "Presenting Pennsylvania
Agriculture, New Ideas for New Markets." The event will highlight some of the
most exciting new advancements in science and technology in agriculture and give
farmers the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with others.
This year's event will be an excellent educational experience for young and old
alike.
In addition to the wide array of agricultural expositions and
competitions, the Farm Show is also home to some of the best food served
anywhere in Pennsylvania. The Food Court, located in the Expo Hall, has
generated millions of dollars to support non-profit Pennsylvania agriculture
organizations.
Agriculture has a rich heritage in Pennsylvania. Farming is one
of the largest sectors of our economy, and I would encourage families to
consider taking part in this year's Farm Show to learn more about our state's
top industry. The 2008 Farm Show will be held in Harrisburg at the Farm Show
Complex, located along Cameron and Maclay Streets. Additional information,
including directions and parking information, can be found at
www.agriculture.state.pa.us/farmshow or by calling (717)787-5373.
