Rhoades Legislation Connects
Wireless Industry with Consumer Concerns
HARRISBURG – As part of his plan to hold cell phone companies
responsible for dropped or lost calls, State Senator James J. Rhoades (R-29)
today unveiled an amended version of his legislative proposal requiring the
study of improved telecommunications coverage throughout Pennsylvania.
"In collaboration with representatives from the wireless
industry, together we are improving wireless coverage and service in the
Commonwealth," Rhoades said.
Senate Resolution 206 would require the Legislative Budget and
Finance Committee (LBFC) to study the improvement and enhancement of
telecommunications coverage in the cell phone industry and direct providers to
develop policies that encourage wireless carriers to improve coverage throughout
Pennsylvania, thus reducing or preventing dropped or lost wireless calls.
"I said it before and I'll say it again, cell phones are no
longer just a device of convenience. More and more consumers are utilizing them
in emergency situations and a dropped call can mean life or death," Rhoades
added.
In many rural areas of Pennsylvania, the ability for a strong
wireless communication network often proves difficult as a result of geography.
Rhoades legislation would study the improvement and enhancement of
telecommunication coverage to those underserved areas.
While the General Assembly cannot mandate wireless communication
providers to provide coverage, this legislation offers recommendations and
encourages wireless carriers to implement proposals given by the LBFC.
If approved, Senate Resolution 206 will require the Legislative
Budget and Finance Committee to submit a final report to the General Assembly by
June 1, 2008."I commend the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional
Licensure Committee for considering this important legislation," Rhoades said.
