Senator Rhoades Urges Homeowners, Businesses to Consider Flood Insurance

HARRISBURG – Senator James J. Rhoades (R-29) is urging homeowners and business owners to protect themselves against flood damage by taking part in the National Flood Insurance Program.

Rhoades said that flood insurance provides an important layer of protection for homeowners because most homeowner insurance policies do not cover flood damage. The NFIP insurance program is available to homeowners, renters, and business owners and is backed by the Federal government.

Pennsylvania ranked 6th in the nation in the number of flood claims paid through the NFIP during the 2005 hurricane season, and there were more than 4,000 flood loss claims in the state during the last fiscal year.

"Floods are the most common natural disaster, and our state is no stranger to the damage that can result from flooding," Rhoades said. "I would encourage area residents to learn more about their flood risk and consider protecting themselves with this insurance."

Insurance is available for flood damage up to $250,000 for a residence and $100,000 for the contents. The average premium costs around $500 a year, but the insurance can cost as little as $112 a year depending on the level of flood risk in the area. Flood insurance can be purchased from private insurers and agents.

There is usually a 30-day waiting period for the coverage to take effect, so prompt consideration is a must, Rhoades said.

For more information on the NFIP or to find a local agent, homeowners can visit www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-800-427-2419.
