Rhoades Announces $20,000 Grant for Theatre Renovation

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY - Senator James J. Rhoades (R-29) today announced a grant award of $20,000 to help restore the Sovereign Majestic Theatre in Pottsville.

The Majestic Theatre Association, which owns the theater, plans to restore the former nickelodeon into a performing and cultural arts center.

"The Majestic is an important part of Pottsville's history," Rhoades said. "I am pleased that the Commonwealth has recognized it as such by providing this funding toward its restoration."

The funding was awarded by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, whose main goal is to preserve, enhance and promote Pennsylvania's historical and cultural treasures. The grant is part of the bureau's Pennsylvania Heritage Areas Program, which focuses specifically on creating new economic development opportunities and increasing tourism.

"The Heritage Areas Program aims to foster new economic opportunities by preserving Pennsylvania's cultural legacies," said Rhoades. "This grant certainly promotes that goal."
