June 12, 2007 - Lawmakers praise COALS program participants
Tim Lambert/Radio Pennsylvania (Harrisburg) -- A number of
volunteers, including some from the midstate, are being honored for their work
to clean up and prevent illegal dumps in Pennsylvania's coal regions. State
Senator John Gordner, whose district includes Columbia, Snyder and
Northumberland counties, praises those involved with the "Clean up Our
Anthracite Lands and Streams" program, known as COALS. He says there are several
examples in his district where high school students and others have worked to
change the mindset that coal mines are a place where folks can take their trash.

Senator James Rhoades of Schuylkill County points out that in 2005 and 2006,
volunteers picked up more than 300 tons of municipal waste and almost 200 tons
of tires from more than 50 sites through COALS. He adds the hope is that the
program can be expanded to the entire Commonwealth.

fulfill the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Senate Bill 154, Senate Bill 155, Senate Bill 157 and Senate
Bill 158 all passed the Senate by an overwhelming vote.
